Benne (pronounced bennie) is an heirloom variety of sesame seeds. During Colonial times, this plant made it??s way from Sub-Saharan Africa to the marshy regions known as the Lowcountry on the coasts of South Carolina and Georgia. There, benne was pressed into economical cooking oil, while the whole seeds provided warm, nuttiness in baked goods. When we learned of such benne-fits, we promptly put them to work in Trader Joe's Benne Wafer Cookies!
